Pregnancy Update - Week 25

Again, we are out of town, so a general update will have to do...

The baby measures about 13.5" long and weighs about 1.5pounds.  The spine is beginning to to form its structures as the blood vessels of the lungs start developing.  Some small blood vessels are starting to form beneath the baby's skin.  As these blood vessels begin to fill with blog, the baby's skin will take on a pink appearance.  The baby also has fully formed fingerprints and her nostrils are starting to open.

Pregnancy Update - Week 24

We are on vacation this week, so I won't be answering the questions like in weeks past, but I do want to give the weekly update...

The baby is about 12" long and weighs about 1.3 pounds.  The baby's lungs are continuing to develop and the baby is practicing breathing by inhaling amniotic fluid into her lungs.  The lungs are producing surfactant, a substance that keeps the air sacs in the lungs from collapsing.  If the baby were to be born at this point, the lungs are developed enough to give the baby a chance of survival.  The baby's face and body are beginning to fill out and look more and more and more like how she will look at birth.  Her muscles are growing, bones are strengthening, and organs are continuing to develop.

Pregnancy Update - Week 23

The baby measures about 11.5" long and weighs almost 1 pound.  Over the next several weeks, the baby will gain significant weight and will almost double in size. The ears are starting to develop as the three main bones are hardening.  This means the baby can listen to sounds however, the brain is still developing rapidly.  The baby's organs are also developing quickly.  the pancreas, which helps produce insulin, is maturing, and the baby now has sweat glands.  The baby will also be moving around a lot during this time so the kicks and punches will continue.

How far along? 23 weeks

Total Weight Gain/Loss: I think it's anywhere from 13-15lbs depending on the time of day and scale being used.  Average weight gain for this point in pregnancy is 12-15lbs so I'm right on track.

Maternity Clothes: For the most part, however, I wore non-maternity jeans on Friday!

Stretch Marks: Not yet.

Symptoms:The back pain has returned with a vengeance.  Lucky me.

Sleep:I am sleeping ok, however, when I wake up, my hips are quite sore and stiff.

Best moment of the week:Kate has started talking to the baby on a daily basis.  It's really cute.

Miss anything?:Being able to lay flat on my back.  I didn't think this would be something I would miss because I don't typically lay flat on my back, however, I've noticed that if I do lay flat on my back, I get dizzy (totally normal during pregnancy).

Movement: Um, yeah.  At points, it actually hurts.

Food Cravings: I didn't think I was actually craving anything until I realized that any time we go out to eat, if they have a ham & pineapple pizza, I must get it.  Also, I've had chicken noodle soup and peanut butter & jelly for dinner twice this week...and for lunch twice.

Anything make you sick or queasy?: Nothing that I can put my finger on this week, however, I've had two days of stomach issues.  Not sure if it's just pregnancy related or if it's some sort of stomach bug.

Anything on the To-Do List this week baby related?: Well, we pulled all the baby baby clothes from the Click's attic last weekend.  In order to make the nursery not look like a COMPLETE disaster, Matt graciously put together the dresser (don't worry, Mom, the bookshelf is still in a box...the crib isn't put together....the recliner is in two pieces...).  I didn't wash the clothes yet, but I did get them sorted and put in drawers (and hung if needed).  I also realized that we need NOTHING in the clothing department.  Between myself and my sister, we saved socks, hats, scratch mittens, burp cloths, receiving blankets, bodysuits, pants, sleepers, dresses, etc.  I still have all of the crib sheets from Kate (and already purchased new ones), we have the sheet protectors, changing pad covers, boppy covers, pillow cases, diaper bags, etc.  I think I'm going to make it my goal to stay our of Babies R Us as long as I can.  Maybe, just maybe, I won't need to step foot in there at all!

Pregnancy Update - Week 22

It's the HALF WAY POINT!  Conventional thinking says that the halfway point in pregnancy is 20 weeks, and I guess that is technically correct.  However, most women don't know they are pregnant until they are 4 weeks, leaving 36 weeks of actually pregnancy time.  Soooo, I'm dividing the 36 by 2 and adding it to the 4 weeks at the beginning when nothing really happens.  Based on that logic, 22 weeks is the halfway point!  18 weeks down, 18 weeks to go!

The baby is measuring about 11 inches from head to heel.  At this point, the baby weighs about 12.5 ounces.  The baby is developing the senses she will use in the outside world.  Taste buds have started to form.  Her brain and the nerve endings are also developed enough to have a sense of touch.  She may begin testing her sense of touch by touching her face or sucking her thumb.

How far along? 22 weeks

Total Weight Gain/Loss: 13ish pounds.

Maternity Clothes: Bottoms, yes.  Tops, I wear either.

Stretch Marks: Nope, but my belly has been super itchy lately.

Symptoms: She must have moved some because I am back in the restroom every hour.  This should make for an interesting trip to Florida in a few weeks.

Sleep: Depends on the day.  Some days I sleep like a rock, other days I toss and turn all night.

Best moment of the week: Creating our Christmas cards.  It's sad, isn't it?

Miss anything?: Fruity adult drinks and beer during football games.

Movement: Oh yeah.  I keep trying to get her to move so Kate and Matt can feel it, but we haven't been successful yet.

Food Cravings: Nothing really, although if it's sweet, I'll probably eat it!

Anything make you sick or queasy?: The smell of dog food.  Oh my gracious!

Anything on the To-Do List this week baby related?: I would really like to start cleaning out the nursery closet and moving some baby stuff in.  But in order to do that, we have to clean out the closet in Kate's room...and in order to do that, we need to clean the closet downstairs.  We'll see how well that works out.

Pregnancy Update - Week 21

The way the baby is measured changes this week.  From here on out, the baby will be measured head to heel (previously, it was head to rump).  The baby should be around 10.5" long and around 10.5 ounces (they estimated the baby was 11ozs at the ultrasound at 19wk 4d so I am guessing she's bigger than that now). The baby is developing visible eyebrows, eyelashes, and hair on her head.  The baby's digestive system has developed enough to start absorbing water and small amounts of sugar from the amniotic fluid she swallows though most of her nourishment comes from the placenta.

How far along? 21 Weeks

Total Weight Gain/Loss:
around 12lbs.

Maternity Clothes:  IF I can get pants to rest comfortably under the belly, then no.  I am still wearing regular tops.

Stretch Marks:
None yet

Symptoms:
Had quite a bit of lower belly pain earlier this week.  It seems to have gone away.  Not sure what it was or what caused it; I'm just glad it's gone!

Sleep: It depends on the night.  Here recently I've been waking up around 2am and again at 4am.  Sometimes I can fall back to sleep easily, other times (like when there's a cricket in the laundry room) it can take a while (if at all).

Best moment of the week:
Making cakes for Kate's school festival with Kate.  She's a good little baker!

Miss anything?:
Again, sleeping on my stomach.  Oh, I miss it!  I'm also getting to the point that I can't lay flat for very long.  I have to be turned to one side or the other.

Movement:
Yep and it's getting stronger.  I actually said "Ouch" the other day.

Food Cravings:
Nothing really, however, I did have the most AMAZING sundae from Graeter's earlier in the week.  Oh my goodness!  It was delightful!

Anything make you sick or queasy?:
Not really, although certain smells still get to me (like the smell of Dixie chili being made...so glad they are right across the street from my office).

Have you started to show yet?:
There's no mistake now.  I'm out of that awkward "pregnant or big belly" stage for sure!  (I'm going to take out this question next week since I can't see answering this question for another 19 weeks).

Pregnancy Update - Week 20

The baby weighs about 11 ounces now. She's also around 6 1/2 inches long from head to bottom and about 10 inches from head to heel — about the size of a banana.
She's swallowing more these days, which is good practice for her digestive system. The baby's skin is also starting to thicken and form two layers, the epidermis and the dermis.

How far along? 20 weeks

Total Weight Gain/Loss: up 10lbs at the doctor

Maternity Clothes: yes and no.  Most of my pants fit still (under the belly) and my shirts still fit.  I have worked some maternity clothes in to the wardrobe this week on days when I knew I would be sitting all day.

Stretch Marks: Nope

Symptoms:I'm still tired almost all the time, but I'm hearing that's pretty normal from other 2nd time moms that are pregnant.

Sleep: It's getting better...except for the charlie horses.  Holy guacamole!  I had a charlie horse Monday night that I was still feeling on Wednesday.

Best moment of the week: Finding out it's a GIRL!  Kate is very excited! Time to start clearing out Kate's closet and adding some baby stuff back in.  At least we can just recycle the storage containers!

Miss anything?: Sleeping on my stomach.

Movement: It has definitely picked up this week.  We have a feisty one too!  She punched both the ultrasound stick thingy and the doctor's Doppler.

Food Cravings:Not really.  I did eat something that didn't sit well with me earlier in the week.  After episodes like that, it takes a while for me to get back to eating much of anything.

Anything make you sick or queasy?:Certain smells and sights -- cigarette smoke is something that I can't handle all that well right now.

Have you started to show yet?: I'm going to say yes.  The belly is getting quite round, especially as the day goes on.

Pregnancy Update - Week 19

The baby measures about 6" from crown to rump and weighs about 7ozs (almost 1/2 pound!).  The baby's permanent teeth buds are forming behind the already formed milk teeth buds (I'm assuming the "milk" teeth are the baby teeth). The baby may start sleeping this week.  babies can find a "favorite" position.  Usually, babies will have their chin tucked into their chest.  Most babies dream when they reach the REM stage of sleep!

How far along? 19 weeks today

Total Weight Gain/Loss: 10lbs

Maternity Clothes: My regular clothes still fit...most of the time.  I put on a pair of my old jeans and I was surprised when they still fit.  I actually think I may be able to continue to wear them for a while IF I keep them under my belly.

Stretch Marks: Nope.  But mosquito bites are a different story.  My legs are one big scratch factory.  When the tree fell earlier this week, we spent a lot of time outside.  Just call me the human mosquito magnet!

Symptoms:We are back to frequent trips to the restroom.  This does not bode well for our trip down to Florida in a few weeks.

Sleep: It's getting better, thank goodness!

Best moment of the week: Hmmm...that's pretty tough.  This week has been pretty low key and nothing much out of the norm has happened.

Miss anything?: Sleeping on my stomach!

Movement: Yep, especially around meal times.

Food Cravings:Nothing really, other than a fountain Coke.  I don't think there is anything better right now than a fountain coke!

Anything make you sick or queasy?: Not really

Have you started to show yet?:I think I "popped" this week.  There is no mistaking I have a belly and depending on the time of day, it's very round and very there.

FYI -- we are expecting to find out the gender of the baby at our next appointment on Tuesday.  We aren't sure if we will be taking Kate with us to this appointment or not.  Because of this, we may not "announce" the gender until Wednesday or Thursday.  Don't worry, we will let everyone know; we just want to make sure Kate knows first!   If she doesn't go to the appointment with us, we may ask the tech not to tell us what the baby is, but rather write it down for us to open later as a family.  If it's a girl, I'm sure Kate will want to share the news with the world.  If it's a boy...

Pregnancy Update - Week 18

The baby measures 5" to 5.8" long from crown to rump.  At this point, the baby weighs about 5.3 ounces.  The baby's ears are approaching their final position and the eyes are also beginning to face forward and the retinas may be able to detect light.  The baby's bones will continue to harden and the pads of his or her fingers and toes will form.  The swirls and creases of fingerprints begin to form this week as well.  The baby's heart is starting to build up muscle an pump about 25 to 30 quarts of blood a day.

How far along? 18 weeks today

Total Weight Gain/Loss: Up 9lbs.  Still right on track according to the lovely app on my phone. I'm trying to walk on the treadmill at least 3-4 times a week just to make sure I'm prepared for all the walking we will do on vacation.  :-)

Maternity Clothes:  Not really, although I am really enojoying my maternity shorts.

Stretch Marks: Nothing yet.  I may need for someone (ahem, mom) to pick me up some more lotion from the cruise line.  LOVE that stuff!

Symptoms: Lots and lots and lots of lower back pain.  I haven't worn heels in months and I moved out of my flats and in to sneakers this week to see if that will help some.

Sleep: What's that?  Oh, you mean the two hours that I get at a time?  Yeah....

Best moment of the week: Listening to Kate talk about the baby...Is the baby going to go with you to work?  Where will the baby go while you are at work and I'm at school?  Where is the baby going to sit in the car?  Will she sit by me?

Miss anything?: Laying on my stomach when I sleep.

Movement:  Yep and they are getting stronger and more frequent.

Food Cravings: Nothing really.  I'm finding that I'm not really interested in eating MUCH at one time.  I still eat breakfast, lunch, and dinner (with a snack after dinner), but I find I'm not eating as much.  Heck, I let Matt eat one of my pierogies from dinner earlier this week!  That NEVER happens.

Anything make you sick or queasy?: Certain smells get to me.  Brushing my teeth has started to make me queasy.

Have you started to show yet?: I'm going to say I'm in the awkard "does she have a fat stomach or is she pregnant?" phase.  All of my work pants still fit which means at some point, my stomach was this size while I wasn't pregnant...

Pregnancy Update - Wk 17

We are starting Week 17 today.  According to my lovely pregnancy app on my phone, the baby measures about 4.5 to 5 inches from crown to rump and weighs approximately 3.5 ounces making it the size of an onion.  Side note -- last week (week 16), the baby was the size of an avocado.  I thought avocados were bigger than onions.  Maybe all the onions I've seen have been small.  Anyway, back to it...

The baby starts to form fat under its skin week.  Interesting note -- at birth, 2-6% of the baby's weight will be fat.  The baby's movements are becoming stronger and more frequent as the bones continue to harden.  Loud noises outside the uterus may also startle the baby.

I followed a blog of someone who was pregnant and at the end of each weekly update, she would answer a series of questions.  I think I'm going to start that here.

How far along? 17 weeks today

Total Weight Gain/Loss: depends on the scale.  My scale at home seems to weigh lighter than the scale at my office and the scale at the doctor's office.  My other thought is I weigh myself first thing in the morning at home and the other scales come later in the day.  But, according to the scale at work, I'm up 7lbs ("normal" range is 5lbs - 9lbs at this point in pregnancy).  Just to gauge, I gained 30 with Kate.

Maternity Clothes:  Not really although I did wear a maternity skirt to work earlier in the week and it was oh so comfortable!

Stretch Marks: Nope.  I didn't get many (if any with Kate) so I'm interested to see what happens this time around.

Symptoms: I feel like I'm back in the first trimester again.  I'm almost constantly tired and moody.  God Bless my husband and child!

Sleep: Depends on the day.  Some nights I could swear I didn't move an inch.  Other nights I feel like I'm up every hour.

Best moment of the week: Finally realizing what I'm feeling is baby movement.  Baby does NOT like it when I sneeze!  It's like a kickboxing class in there after I sneeze!

Miss anything?: Beer/fruity adult drinks

Movement:  I feel it every now and then.  Nothing consistent yet.

Food Cravings: It changes based on the day.  Most of the time it's Italian or Mexican.  Or a beer.  Or mashed potatoes...must keep potatoes and peas in the house at all times!

Anything make you sick or queasy?: Again, it changes based on the day.  Most recently it's been salads (thank you food poisoning).

Have you started to show yet?: Depends on the day, the time of day, who you ask, and what I wear.  I've had people tell me that I look pregnant today and I've also had people tell me that they can't even tell I'm pregnant.  I can tell, but I can also feel what's happening (and all that stretching!).
