The way the baby is measured changes this week. From here on out, the baby will be measured head to heel (previously, it was head to rump). The baby should be around 10.5" long and around 10.5 ounces (they estimated the baby was 11ozs at the ultrasound at 19wk 4d so I am guessing she's bigger than that now). The baby is developing visible eyebrows, eyelashes, and hair on her head. The baby's digestive system has developed enough to start absorbing water and small amounts of sugar from the amniotic fluid she swallows though most of her nourishment comes from the placenta.
How far along? 21 Weeks
Total Weight Gain/Loss: around 12lbs.
Maternity Clothes: IF I can get pants to rest comfortably under the belly, then no. I am still wearing regular tops.
Stretch Marks: None yet
Symptoms: Had quite a bit of lower belly pain earlier this week. It seems to have gone away. Not sure what it was or what caused it; I'm just glad it's gone!
Sleep: It depends on the night. Here recently I've been waking up around 2am and again at 4am. Sometimes I can fall back to sleep easily, other times (like when there's a cricket in the laundry room) it can take a while (if at all).
Best moment of the week: Making cakes for Kate's school festival with Kate. She's a good little baker!
Miss anything?: Again, sleeping on my stomach. Oh, I miss it! I'm also getting to the point that I can't lay flat for very long. I have to be turned to one side or the other.
Movement: Yep and it's getting stronger. I actually said "Ouch" the other day.
Food Cravings: Nothing really, however, I did have the most AMAZING sundae from Graeter's earlier in the week. Oh my goodness! It was delightful!
Anything make you sick or queasy?: Not really, although certain smells still get to me (like the smell of Dixie chili being made...so glad they are right across the street from my office).
Have you started to show yet?: There's no mistake now. I'm out of that awkward "pregnant or big belly" stage for sure! (I'm going to take out this question next week since I can't see answering this question for another 19 weeks).
I am sending an angel before you to protect you on your journey and lead you safely to the place I have prepared for you. (Exodus 23:20)

Pregnancy Update - Week 20
The baby weighs about 11 ounces now. She's also around 6 1/2
inches long from head to bottom and about 10 inches from head to heel — about the size of a banana.
She's swallowing more these days, which is good practice for her digestive system. The baby's skin is also starting to thicken and form two layers, the epidermis and the dermis.
How far along? 20 weeks
Total Weight Gain/Loss: up 10lbs at the doctor
Maternity Clothes: yes and no. Most of my pants fit still (under the belly) and my shirts still fit. I have worked some maternity clothes in to the wardrobe this week on days when I knew I would be sitting all day.
Stretch Marks: Nope
Symptoms:I'm still tired almost all the time, but I'm hearing that's pretty normal from other 2nd time moms that are pregnant.
Sleep: It's getting better...except for the charlie horses. Holy guacamole! I had a charlie horse Monday night that I was still feeling on Wednesday.
Best moment of the week: Finding out it's a GIRL! Kate is very excited! Time to start clearing out Kate's closet and adding some baby stuff back in. At least we can just recycle the storage containers!
Miss anything?: Sleeping on my stomach.
Movement: It has definitely picked up this week. We have a feisty one too! She punched both the ultrasound stick thingy and the doctor's Doppler.
Food Cravings:Not really. I did eat something that didn't sit well with me earlier in the week. After episodes like that, it takes a while for me to get back to eating much of anything.
Anything make you sick or queasy?:Certain smells and sights -- cigarette smoke is something that I can't handle all that well right now.
Have you started to show yet?: I'm going to say yes. The belly is getting quite round, especially as the day goes on.

Pregnancy Update - Week 19
The baby measures about 6" from crown to rump and weighs about 7ozs (almost 1/2 pound!). The baby's permanent teeth buds are forming behind the already formed milk teeth buds (I'm assuming the "milk" teeth are the baby teeth). The baby may start sleeping this week. babies can find a "favorite" position. Usually, babies will have their chin tucked into their chest. Most babies dream when they reach the REM stage of sleep!
How far along? 19 weeks today
Total Weight Gain/Loss: 10lbs
Maternity Clothes: My regular clothes still fit...most of the time. I put on a pair of my old jeans and I was surprised when they still fit. I actually think I may be able to continue to wear them for a while IF I keep them under my belly.
Stretch Marks: Nope. But mosquito bites are a different story. My legs are one big scratch factory. When the tree fell earlier this week, we spent a lot of time outside. Just call me the human mosquito magnet!
Symptoms:We are back to frequent trips to the restroom. This does not bode well for our trip down to Florida in a few weeks.
Sleep: It's getting better, thank goodness!
Best moment of the week: Hmmm...that's pretty tough. This week has been pretty low key and nothing much out of the norm has happened.
Miss anything?: Sleeping on my stomach!
Movement: Yep, especially around meal times.
Food Cravings:Nothing really, other than a fountain Coke. I don't think there is anything better right now than a fountain coke!
Anything make you sick or queasy?: Not really
Have you started to show yet?:I think I "popped" this week. There is no mistaking I have a belly and depending on the time of day, it's very round and very there.
FYI -- we are expecting to find out the gender of the baby at our next appointment on Tuesday. We aren't sure if we will be taking Kate with us to this appointment or not. Because of this, we may not "announce" the gender until Wednesday or Thursday. Don't worry, we will let everyone know; we just want to make sure Kate knows first! If she doesn't go to the appointment with us, we may ask the tech not to tell us what the baby is, but rather write it down for us to open later as a family. If it's a girl, I'm sure Kate will want to share the news with the world. If it's a boy...

Weekend in Review
Our weekends are always packed with things to do and this weekend was no different. We had planned on heading to IKEA on Saturday to look at sofas, but after finding one on Thursday, we didn't need that. BUT, we did need some furniture for the nursery. On the list to look for...a dresser that can serve double duty as a changing table and a bookshelf. Simple enough, right? Ha!
After walking through all the beautiful kitchens (and realizing Matt and I have VERY different tastes in kitchen styles), we made it to the bookshelf area. Found a bookshelf with no problem. Score! Head over to the bedroom area for dressers...problem! None of the dressers we liked matched the bookshelf we picked. The first dresser we liked was a high boy dresser. If we got a high boy, we'd need a changing table...off to the changing table area. Found a bookshelf changing table combo...that only came in white. I don't know about you but I have NO desire to put white furniture in a room that will eventually be used by a toddler. No thank you. Found another changing table...it only came in blue. Back to the dresser area.
We found another dresser. Perfect height to pull double duty as a changing table. Again, it didn't match the bookshelf we wanted. Back to the bookshelf area. Found a bookshelf, but then realized something. The dresser was too long to put it where we originally wanted to put it (along the outside wall). So, being 2nd time parents, we decide the crib can go on the outside wall and the dresser can go where we were originally going to put the crib. When Kate was born, we absolutely did not want her on the outside wall of the house...she could get cold! Strange how things change with the 2nd child!
Poor Kate was such a trooper throughout the store. She did manage to keep herself entertained for the most part. I did have to pull out a granola bar to keep her busy, but she did such a good job being patient with us.
After Ikea, we headed for Jungle Jim's. Big mistake. Noon on a Saturday. YIKES! Kate and I both decided that it was time to head home. We had had enough and just wanted to lay down and nap. And that's what we did when we got home! I feel asleep on the couch and Kate played in her room until she fell asleep. We were supposed to go to a band competition that afternoon, but we were all exhausted and decided to stay home.
Sunday, it was church and then over to Kevin and Julie's for the Bengals game. As has become our tradition, we cook a meal that is "native" to the city the Bengals are playing. This week, it was Chicago. We didn't want pizza or hot dogs, so we settled on Italian Beef Sandwiches. Recipe for the beef is here...for the pepper topping, it's here. It's a good thing the sandwiches were good because the Bengals game most certainly wasn't! How horrible was that?!?
All in all, a very good weekend. Too bad we have to go back to work and school to slow down!

Both the dresser and the bookshelf will be in a dark brown. I could only find the white color online.

Thursday Night Fun
We've been talking for a while about getting new couches. The dogs have been very tough on the couches we have and we seem to replace slipcovers as often as we change the bed sheets. I don't care what the slipcover packaging says, it doesn't release dog hair and it most certainly doesn't stay tucked in. We were also needing a place for visitors to stay when they come to visit since all the bedrooms are spoken for. With all that in mind, we set out Thursday night to see if we could find anything that was dog friendly while being visitor friendly as well.
I am the type of person that once I have something in mind, I think I should be able to find it without much hassle. How difficult is it to find a black or brown leather (or pleather) sectional sofa with a sofa bed? Um, it's difficult! We made it to 5 stores (yes, 5) within an hour (three of them were in the same strip mall and the other two were across the street). We found something that we liked but weren't 100% sold on. Some of us also got distracted by the cool media room furniture that reclined with a touch of a button (and had cool light up cup holders!).
Our little consumer pipes up from the back seat as we are getting ready to head home and says "Hey Mommy, what about Watson's?" and then she starts to sing their little jingle. I'm telling you, companies don't market to adults. They market to kids who remember commercials and all the little details. Sure enough, Watson's was right down the road and they were having a sale on...sectionals!
While someone was more interested in looking at the pools and spas (and would have climbed in if we had her bathing suit), we did manage to find something that we all REALLY liked. And while it doesn't have a sleeper sofa, it was within our budget, has TWO recliners (just in time for football season), multiple storage areas, and fit in our space! Oh, and it has cup holders too...they just don't light up. After trying it out (multiple times), we decided it was a good fit for us (it even has a spot for Butter to sit...talk about perfect!). It should be delivered next Tuesday! Woot Woot!

We thought about putting our couches on Facebook saying "Free to a good home" but since two of the couch cushions are LITERALLY held together with duct tape, they will be heading to Mt. Rumpke next week. We've had the couches since we moved in the house (7 years) and they've been through 3 dogs and a toddler so they've lived a good life.
Now we just have to remember to keep the dogs' nails clipped...

Pregnancy Update - Week 18
The baby measures 5" to 5.8" long from crown to rump. At this point, the baby weighs about 5.3 ounces. The baby's ears are approaching their final position and the eyes are also beginning to face forward and the retinas may be able to detect light. The baby's bones will continue to harden and the pads of his or her fingers and toes will form. The swirls and creases of fingerprints begin to form this week as well. The baby's heart is starting to build up muscle an pump about 25 to 30 quarts of blood a day.
How far along? 18 weeks today
Total Weight Gain/Loss: Up 9lbs. Still right on track according to the lovely app on my phone. I'm trying to walk on the treadmill at least 3-4 times a week just to make sure I'm prepared for all the walking we will do on vacation. :-)
Maternity Clothes: Not really, although I am really enojoying my maternity shorts.
Stretch Marks: Nothing yet. I may need for someone (ahem, mom) to pick me up some more lotion from the cruise line. LOVE that stuff!
Symptoms: Lots and lots and lots of lower back pain. I haven't worn heels in months and I moved out of my flats and in to sneakers this week to see if that will help some.
Sleep: What's that? Oh, you mean the two hours that I get at a time? Yeah....
Best moment of the week: Listening to Kate talk about the baby...Is the baby going to go with you to work? Where will the baby go while you are at work and I'm at school? Where is the baby going to sit in the car? Will she sit by me?
Miss anything?: Laying on my stomach when I sleep.
Movement: Yep and they are getting stronger and more frequent.
Food Cravings: Nothing really. I'm finding that I'm not really interested in eating MUCH at one time. I still eat breakfast, lunch, and dinner (with a snack after dinner), but I find I'm not eating as much. Heck, I let Matt eat one of my pierogies from dinner earlier this week! That NEVER happens.
Anything make you sick or queasy?: Certain smells get to me. Brushing my teeth has started to make me queasy.
Have you started to show yet?: I'm going to say I'm in the awkard "does she have a fat stomach or is she pregnant?" phase. All of my work pants still fit which means at some point, my stomach was this size while I wasn't pregnant...

Kindergarten...according to Kate
As we were driving over the weekend, Matt decided to ask Kate about her first two weeks of Kindergarten. Here's a little insight in to Kate's first two weeks of Kindergarten...
Matt: Kate, what's your favorite part of Kindergarten?
Kate: Friday Free Time!
Matt: Okay, besides Friday Free Time (basically they don't have anything planned during that time so the kids can pick what they want to do). what's your favorite part of Kindergarten?
Kate: Cleaning Up!
Matt: Excuse me? Did you say cleaning up?
Kate: Yep! Every day after lunch and recess and rest time and snack time, we have to clean up. I like that part!
Kate has also started ordering from the cafeteria. She likes to order on Mondays (chicken nuggets from Chick-Fil-A) and Fridays (pizza from either LaRosas or Snappy Tomato Pizza).
She really likes the "extra" classes that happen during the week -- Monday is Gym. Tuesday is Art. Wednesday is Music. Thursday is Library (she gets to see the "Book Lady" at church too). Friday is...Friday Free Time!
She also said that her favorite thing to do at her desk is her math worksheets. Currently, they are doing a lot of counting and sorting/grouping things.
Kate typically comes home exhausted. Apparently rest time just isn't long enough for her. She normally falls asleep in the car on the way home and if she doesn't do that, she's been known to go in to her room to "play" and has fallen asleep instead.
